Thank Bob for the Ace Gang!

Happy July 3rd!
So back in the day, one of my college roomies and all around awesome pally, Ms. Melissa Layton used to put together these awesome mix cds as Christmas presents for her room mates.
They were really fun because each of the roomies, Becky, Nomi, Lissa, and Me would pick out our favorite songs of that year.  And Melissa would put those favorite tracks into a fun playlist!
She would also create an “album” cover and theme for the CD which was always brilliant.
In honor of Melissa’s awesomeness and her love of sharing good music, I created a playlist for her.  Yeah I know it sounds cheesy and corny but I don’t care.
I know Lissa will appreciate my randomness.
I chose songs from bands she introduced to me which include Mae, New Years Day, October Fall, The Classic Crime and Erin Mckeown (to name a few). I also put on the playlist songs I remember all of us jamming out to in college like “Move Along” by The All-American Rejects,  and “A Million Ways” by OK GO (we tried to learn the dance moves to that song but we just had too much fun goofing around) , ahhh those were the days.  I remember all of us singing loud in the car to “Dark Blue” by Jack’s Mannequin and “I saw it on Your Keyboard” by Hellogoodbye as we drove to nowhere in particular.  I would always add my “wonderful” harmonizing vocals to the songs which would always get a laugh, I don't know why :P.
I also remember this music as we sang and danced our way through college including the many concerts we got to go to like being able to hear Quietdrive’s amazing cover “Time after Time” as we cheered in the front row!
I included some new tracks that that remind me of Melissa; “You are Young” by Keane and “Fairytale Lullaby” by Bombay Bicycle Club.  I think Fairytale Lullaby is very fitting for Lissa because she also loves reading and books so much.

This is for you, my pally!  I hope you enjoy this music compilation!  Thanks for the good music J

Tornado Days

Well last weekend was an eventful one.  We had several tornadoes actually touchdown in the Midwest.  The news said over 100!   Not all of them were devastating, large wind cyclones of doom but quite a few did cause some major damage.  When we moved here folks said they had not seen a tornado in Wichita for about 20 years or so…… I guess it was about due.
Saturday (the day of the big storm) was pretty laid back; we got to talk to my brother, his wife, his new son and my parents through Skype.  Before we ended our visit, Dad yelled through the laptop that there were tornadoes all over the Midwest.  Stan moved his laptop in front of the TV so that we could see.  I told them not to worry, we’ll be fine.
Around 9pm or so that same evening, I heard the tornado warning alarm go off.  Yes we have a citywide alarm system which can be heard outside and all over Wichita.  The sound is blaring and incredibly annoying like the kind you set to wake up in the morning but way worse.  The alarm has to be like that because the sound means business, means you need to find shelter NOW.
Adam was upstairs getting ready for bed and I was downstairs washing dishes.  I went up to ask Adam what in the world was going on.  He went online to check the weather updates and sure enough it advised us to go to the basement and find safe shelter.  We quickly grabbed a flashlight, unplugged all the electronics we could (we did not want to fry the computer if the power turned on and off suddenly) and went down to our basement.  We also grabbed some good walking shoes just in case, at the time we didn’t know what to expect, we wanted to be ready for anything.
At first, waiting out the tornado/ storm wasn’t a big deal.  We just watched the tornado pass through our city block on Adam’s phone and played a game of Ingenious.  I was winning in the beginning and then out of nowhere Adam claimed victory; we are going to have a re-match.
We also talked about how we need to be more prepared for a tornado, and what we should do when another hits the ground.  We also joked about how it would be crazy if the top half of our house were to blow away, and then stopped joking about it because it made us feel uneasy.
Adam called his mom, to let her know we were okay and what was going on.  We kept her updated.  The power went off for close to an hour.  Although it was dark, we did not get much sleep that night.  Heavy rain beat against our small basement window, and we saw flashes of light quickly illuminate the room and we heard the wind violently smash against objects outside.
Thankfully, the storm passed through our city block without much damage at all.  Unfortunately, other parts of Wichita were not so lucky.   At church the next morning we heard stories of how devastating the storm was for other people.
The first Monday after the tornado, I drove Adam to work and all of the roads leading to his work were blocked off.  There has been extensive damage down to the buildings at his work, power lines are down, building roofs smashed in; Adam has had two “tornado days” (basically “snow days”).  That day we also went to the DOL to get a Kansas state License Plate put on our car and had to wait close to an hour extra for their computers to get back online, there server was down all morning probably because of the storm.
The whole city is still recovering from the effects of the tornado last weekend.
I wanted to share this experience to our family and friends in Washington because Adam and I have never experienced anything like this in our lives.  In Washington you don’t really need to worry about tornadoes, or heavy wind storms.
Also, it made me think about two important aspects in our lives.  We need to be more prepared and we need to enjoy & love life now because it can change in a second.  I am so thankful for my loving, supportive, all around awesome husband, Adam, my calm during the storm.  And I am thankful for all of our good family and friends who care about our well-being.
I hope you all are safe and sound in your niche of the world, thanks for reading!

“What’s a home without a nice comfy bed?”

A good night’s rest is one of the most important things I need to help me conquer the next day with enthusiasm and positivity.  And while I can’t always have the luxury of getting an uninterrupted, consistent, cozy, nightmare-free minimum of 8 hours sleep each night, a good comfy bed sure can make a 4 hour night sleep feel like I’ve gotten 8 (well most of the time :P )
When Adam and I first moved here we did not have a bed and we had to sleep on the floor, which I do not recommend.  I think a day later we got a mattress and then a few days after that we got our lovely frame.  Per Adam’s request and mine too, I am sharing to you all the evolution of our bed, in pictures.
Hope you all have more good nights of sound sleeping than restless nights with too many interruptions such as crying children, nocturnal pets or bad dreams.
Sweet Dreams!

We arrived at our town home before our stuff did... so we got to sleep on the floor. Our pillows were made of our clothes from our luggage and the blanket we got from Wal-mart.  It was like camping, sort of

We used shirts from our luggage as pillow cases because the moving van still hadn't arrived.  Also we used our actual suitcases as night stands
We were lucky to get a discount on our Tempur-pedic pillows, great neck and head support

The Bed is a King Size Pillow Top Mattress

Our lovely frame, has a curve to it!  It makes the bed look huge!  We literally get to "climb" into bed every night :)  It made Adam a happy camper, because he loves beds that you need a step ladder to get onto :P

The Curved Legs

Our complete bed, with our winter bedding, we felt like royalty :)

"Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Washington anymore."

There’s no place like home!  How true that is, Washington will always be our original home but we are so excited to make our little niche here in Kansas!  Settling here has been quite an adventure, and I feel like we are pioneers trekking in reverse.  We’ve staked our claim in the Pacific Northwest and now we are heading back to our roots in the Midwest.
Here are a few pictures of our little piece of Wichita.  Hope the day is going well for you all and I also hope your home feels like home wherever you may be in the world.

Our Front door!

Our town home is 3 stories tall, with one full bath and one have bath.  It has two bedrooms with large closet spaces and a finished basement.  Also, we have a utility room and a cute little back yard.
The living room and front door

More of the Living room

Our new couch! We were hoping it would fit in the basement, unfortunately, it didn't fit through the door frame to the basement, so it remains upstairs
To the Kitchen
I love all the cabinets and storage space in this home, especially in the Kitchen

Our town home complex has 2 pools and 2 hot tubs.  We will be putting those to use in the Summer!
Our little fenced part of our back yard.  I am hoping to get a Grill and start a veggie garden!

The downstairs half bath

Some of our stuff is still in boxes because we don't have much furniture or shelves yet
 Utility Room
So happy we have a washer & dryer in the house!

Office Room (2nd bedroom)

We also have a balcony off of the Office room
We don't have a computer desk yet, so we fashioned one from a couple of TV trays and an end table :P

2nd Bedroom Closets
Love the closet space!

Master Bathroom

We also have a sink in our Master bedroom!  It's great cuz Adam and I literally have our own sinks and space to get ready in the morning

 Master Closet
I unfortunately didn't get the best picture of the master bedroom, despite the picture it is a rather large master bedroom

Also, I wanted to share a lovely song Adam gave to me which I think truly expresses the famous saying, “Home is where the heart is.” Enjoy!
